A Day Through Europe’s Grand Canyon – Our Favorite Roundtrip to the Gorges du Verdon
Gorges du Verdon
Just over an hour from Mullers Bed and Breakfast lies one of Europe’s most breathtaking natural wonders – the Gorges du Verdon.
Often called the “Grand Canyon of Europe”, this is a day full of dramatic views, fragrant lavender fields, clifftop villages, and a chance to swim in the turquoise waters of Lac de Sainte-Croix.
Here’s our personal favorite route – perfect for a full-day trip from Bargemon.
The Route
🛣️ Route and Highlights
We start in Bargemon and drive via Comps-sur-Artuby, where we pick up the D955 and follow signs toward Rougon.
Along the way, just after a small tunnel, there’s a sharp left turn leading to a small parking area. From there, you can walk down a stone stairway into the gorge itself – and visit some hidden caves carved into the cliffs. It’s a magical and little-known stop.
Next, we continue to the hilltop village of Rougon, where sweeping views await – and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot vultures gliding over the canyon.
From La Palud-sur-Verdon, you can optionally take the Route des Crêtes, a spectacular loop drive offering dramatic viewpoints. (We highly recommend it if time allows!)
Then we head to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – a postcard-perfect village known for its pottery and mountain setting. A great spot for lunch and a stroll.
From here, the road winds through blooming lavender fields (late June to mid-July – absolutely unforgettable) toward Saint-Croix-du-Verdon, where you can take a refreshing swim or relax by the lake.
We then follow the lakeside road to Bauduen, a peaceful village ideal for an ice cream or coffee break with a view.
Finally, we return home via Aiguines, Verignon, Ampus, and Châteaudouble – back to Bargemon, a little tired and very happy.
